Blockchain, Drones & Robots, Science Function? More Like the Future!

I’m relatively new to the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. In reality, I’ve only been delving myself into the world of crypto/blockchain since January of this year. However, I did have a brief encounter with it in 2013, back when bitcoin was worth approximately $60USD per coin. I thought ‘hey, this is cool! I can mine stuff on my computer and make money?! I’m in!’ Regrettably, I didn’t take it very seriously at that time. I mined for a short period then simply forgot about it. I’m pretty sure MtGox still owes me some money for what I did mine.

Anyway, short story long, I didn’t view blockchain or cryptocurrency as anything more than an advanced ledger/monetary system to keep track of transactions between peers. Cool in-and-of-itself, but nothing earth-shattering, or so I thought.

We are currently still at the ground floor of the possibilities of what blockchain technology can do for us as a global community. Headlines are being made, nearly daily, about multi-million dollar contracts being awarded for uses of blockchain technology. From global currency to data security, to tracking the global food supply chain, the possibilities truly seem endless.

Admittedly, when I re-entered the crypto-sphere earlier this year, I was only looking to create financial wealth for myself. Don’t get me wrong, that’s still a driving factor behind my investments and interests in the crypto/blockchain world; However, I find myself becoming more and more interested in the technology and it’s potential to change the way we interact and do business.

I recently stumbled across a blockchain project which embodies just what I’m talking about. SKYFchain claims to be the first business-to-robot, blockchain based, operating platform. I’m a little conflicted by this as it’s a direct threat to my day job. I’m a freight-line conductor for a class A railroad here in the US. There’s been a big push to automate our industry to negate human error. In fact, automation is now a daily part of my life on the rail. It hasn’t completely replaced the workforce but it’s certainly changing the way we do business and how we control our locomotives.

That being said, it is what sparked my interest in what they are doing over at SKYF. We’ve all heard about self-driving cars, but what about a completely automated system specifically designed to remove the human factor altogether? That’s exactly what SKYF is doing now. They’ve already launched a massive drone capable of an autonomous flight up to 220mi (320km) with a payload of up to 880lbs (400kg) and a quick deployment time, less than 10 minutes. To top it off they already have real-world clients utilizing their platform.

According to their business summary PDF, they are working on automated trucks and ships as well. Needless to say, payloads will be significantly larger than what their drone is capable of. Their technology will create waves in the shipping and logistics industries. There’s the possibility that it will disrupt other industries as well. Japanese firefighters have been eyeing their technology and drone to possibly help fight fires in areas that are difficult to reach with current equipment.

By implementing blockchain technology they are able to ‘provide a trusted source of data and reasonable control over unmanned assets for clients, logistics operators, insurance and leasing companies, banks, and authorities worldwide.’Blockchain helps maintain the integrity of their platform which will in-turn create a trustworthy partner for the movement of their clients’ cargo.

SKYFChain has firmly placed themselves at the forefront of blockchain autonomous cargo delivery. I can only speculate that UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Amazon are keeping a watchful eye on them. I will be as well; if you can’t beat them join them!

What are your thoughts? Are there other uses you can see that SKYFchain might take advantage of with their current platform?
